It is named after Indian tribal freedom fighter Birsa Munda and is currently managed by Airports Authority of India. The airport is located in Hinoo, approximately 5 km (3.1 mi) from the centre of the city. The whole airport sprawls over 1568 acres of land though AAI has control over an area of 546 acres (221 hectares) only. The airport is used by more than 1.5 million passengers annually and is the 28th busiest airport in India.
